Fresh Start

November is such a beautiful time of the year. Just the thought of November sends a warm sensation all the way to my toes. The vivid colors of the falling leaves, the cool nip of the autumn wind, and the smell of pumpkin spice seemingly bellowing out into the streets from cozy cafes inspire me to savor every moment of life, take a deep breath, and be content right where I am. I think this season of gratefulness and appreciation is necessary to prepare us for the season to come.

When December fades into the hopeful month of January, we all look at it as another chance to follow our hearts, accomplish our dreams and improve ourselves in a myriad of ways. We even make lists, rather physically or mentally, of goals we want to accomplish by this time next year. We’re all thinking ahead, feeling inspired and driven.

This year, my Pastor has decided that maybe we shouldn’t wait until January to get a fresh start. I don’t know if this is true of everyone, but the people in the body of Christ as a whole seem to have had a tough year. At least that’s what seems to be all around me. They all need a fresh start sooner rather than later. So why not now? Why do we have to wait until the world tells us it’s time to start over? I believe that the spiritual seasons we go through in life often reflect the changes of the weather. Somehow God makes that all work, but haven’t you ever been through a warm winter or a cool summer. Maybe, there are times when that pattern is broken and God is trying to do something with us that we don’t expect.

This month our church is focusing on harvesting the blessings that God has for us and with those fresh blessings, making a “Fresh Start.” I encourage you to do the same. I think it’s something that is not only for our church, but I have a hunch that what’s going on at our church is going on at others as well. What a great relief it would be to start accomplishing goals now and start having a new attitude towards life NOW rather than waiting for the new year. Maybe our new year can start today. The word says that His mercies are new everyday, so why can’t this be true? (Lam 3: 21- 23) I’m going to start taking advantage of His new mercies. The Word also says that He loads us daily with benefits. (Ps. 68:19) What a great promise! Everyday we get a fresh load of benefits and mercy to cover when we don’t handle those benefits just right. We have every reason to start a new life today. The life we’ve been wanting to live all year, or maybe just since yesterday.
