Remembering God’s GoodnessThis time of year we all ready to start over and set new goals for ourselves, but it’s also a time of remembrance. We assess what was accomplished in the past year, and for most of us, it falls short of what we had hoped; but usually everyone can find something to celebrate even if it’s not winning the lottery. Maybe this year you got a new job, or a new house. Maybe you found love or had a baby. Maybe you got healthy or if all else fails, you can celebrate making it through the holidays! Remembering is just as important as envisioning the future. In fact, our past is often the springboard of tomorrow. I started thinking about all of this when I read a journal entry of mine last night. It was something I had written just 3 months ago, but I was amazed at how many things I had already forgotten. It rejuvenated my faith to meditate upon those things, and see how far I had come. Our past shouldn’t hold us back, it should be a catapult for our future. It should serve as a reference point so we can see how far we’ve come. In the bible, there were several instances written about where memorials were built in honor of how God had provided. Joshua 4:1-9 is one of my favorite accounts as God instructed Joshua and the Israelites to stack 12 stones, one for each tribe in the middle of the Jordan in memorial of the waters being cut off for the Ark of the covenant. It is something that stands to speak to the generations to come. I realize that the illustration I just brought out was about making a public memorial, and what I’m referencing here is a personal one. I think both are important. Testimonies are are a good way of building a public memorial. Then if you forget what God has done for you, someone else will have that knowledge you when you need to be reminded. When I take time to think about these things, and remember, I seem to always feel a surge of faith. I don’t normally journal, but this year, I’m determined to memorialize more of the things God is doing in my life and take time to look at them, or listen to them, and be grateful. Reader Comments
