It’s the Most Stressful Time of the Year

This is the season known for busyness, or “bustling” as some Christmas tunes put it. We’re all rushing around trying to beat the clock, get every ribbon tied, every present purchased, and every card mailed. It’s almost enough to make you go a little bit nuts! Sure, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” but it’s also the most stressful!

Especially in these times, it is vitally important for each of us to take a moment here and there to just breathe. His Word tells us in Psalms 46:10 “be still and know that I am God.” It always amazes me how much I get out of so little time, when that time is spent with God. After all, He is the reason for this season. What a shame it would be to get through this season without spending some of our oh so precious time with the one whose birth has inspired centuries of celebration.

I find that the best time for me is in the morning. Every time I put it off until later in the day, something else comes in and crowds that time. Then the only communication I get in with Him is the muttered prayer under my breath begging Him to help me get a parking space near the door at Walmart. I make myself get up ten minutes early to just sit there and have coffee with Him. Sometimes, I read, sometimes I pray, and honestly sometimes I just stare at the wall and try to stay awake; but I dedicate that time to Him. I don’t think about what I have to do that day or what I’m going to eat for breakfast. I just be still and focus on knowing Him.

Some days that is the only time I get to myself. It’s the only time I get to focus on my spiritual life outside of Sunday services.  It’s often the only sane moment in my day, and I’m always thankful for it. Maybe not at the time, but later in the day when everything else is going wrong, I can remember the peace of that moment, and it brings me back to reality. The reality of knowing that He is God, and that He is in control. That nothing is too hard for Him, and that He my strength and peace, and most of all during these trying economic times, that He is my provider…not any one person or company on this Earth. That time alone with Him gives us hope, and I find that He often prepares me in the morning for what is to come in the afternoon. He constantly amazes me with His wisdom.

So during this Christmas season, don’t forget be still and KNOW all that He is to you and yours, and I promise you’ll find this Christmas a little more joyful. It’s the best gift of the year to give yourself.
