Fireproof - The Movie![]() What Is Fireproof?
KEY:
L> So, I’m really excited about this movie. I’ve read a lot about it, but for our reader’s sake, why don’t you tell us what Fireproof is all about.
S> Fireproof follows the story of Caleb Holt who is a captain at a local fire department. He and his wife Catherine have been married for seven years, and like most couples they have kind of fallen out of love with one another. Things have kind of run dry, and they aren’t believers. He has an issue with looking at things on the internet that he doesn’t need to look at. She feels like he doesn’t understand her and isn’t helping her at home, and he says, “you don’t understand the pressures I have at work as a firefighter.” Well, he has a motto at work of “never leave your partner behind,” but he doesn’t apply that at home with his wife. He’s wondering why he gets all this respect at work, but he doesn’t get respect at home.
The last half of the movie he’s this man who is begging God to help him to learn to demonstrate love for his wife, and he’s trying to win her back after he’s mistreated her for all these years. So there’s some twists and turns throughout the story. We put action sequences in there, so the men are going to be able to relate to Caleb, and the banter that the other firefighters have at the station, but we also follow Catherine and what she’s going through emotionally. Our hope is that when people watch this movie, they’ll be able to laugh and cry, and they’ll be caught up in the story of this Love Dare journey that Caleb is going on, but most importantly that they’ll walk out of the theater with something to think about and challenge them to reconsider what unconditional love really is. We’ve taken some of the foundational truths about marriage, and we’ve embedded them into the story line of the movie, so when someone walks out of the theater, they’ve been entertained, but they’ve learned something as well.
L> Now, you talked about The Love Dare. I’ve heard that the actual writing of that book is in process. Is that true? Are you and your brother writing it together since you wrote the movie together?
L> Well, tell me a little bit about it, and when we might expect to see it on the shelves. S> Well, The Love Dare is going to be released in January of 2009 when the DVD for Fireproof comes out. It will be released by Broadman Holman publishers, and we’re working with them on that. Basically to encapsulate The Love Dare instead of following you’re heart, we address in the movie, you need to lead your heart. Jesus said, “Lay up your treasure in Heaven, for your heart will follow your treasure.” Then Paul said in Col. 3, “Set your heart on things above, not on things of this earth.” So scripture communicates a message of you guide your heart where it needs to go rather than just letting it chase it’s whims and feelings. Well, The Love Dare is a journey where somebody is investing in a relationship, and they’re leading their heart back to where that relationship should be. At the same time they are studying the roles and responsibilities of a husband and wife to a certain degree, and we’re going through 1 Cor. 13 as to the differences between a real agape unconditional love and what the world says love is which is just a feeling you’re falling in and out of. That’s not a bad thing, the Lord has created that whole romantic feeling, but it’s the cherry and the whip cream on top, it’s not the main course deal. L> Kirk, coming into a production where you were one of the few professional actors, where you surprised that you had to audition? K> I was thrilled just to be able to play some kind of part after seeing Facing the Giants. As far as auditioning, I think my manager was more surprised than I was. I knew that the producers wanted the right man for the role and the God man for the role, and there was no way for them to really know that until I came there and spent some time with them. The only thing I had a question about was that they made me audition 9 of the hardest scenes in the movie! HA HA
L> WOW! Was it challenging for you show that range of emotion?
L> Did you have any previous connection to the church? K> A little bit. After I saw Facing the Giants we had connected at another church event. Then I spoke at Sherwood one Sunday morning, and heard about the storyline for Fireproof, and that’s when I got really interested. L> Erin, since you’re a single woman, how did this intense marital role affect you? E> Well, when you’re acting in a role that you don’t understand or relate to, it helps to have writers like Stephen and Alex who really speak the emotion of a real person. Even though I couldn’t relate to her as a married woman, I still related to the emotions she felt as a real woman. They’re just very genuine emotions. I felt like she was a real person, someone I had known before. It was interesting and I learned a whole lot. L>Do you think it prepared you in a way even more for marriage? E> Yeah, I mean if you can be prepared for marriage. Obviously there are some things you just can’t be prepared for, but I think it kind of opened up my eyes to how hard it is and how hard you have to work. Also as a single person, how you really choose the person you’re going to spend your life with. Is this person someone who will fight for me and with me and work together?
L> Kirk, what was involved in the preparation for this role?
S> Kirk nailed all of those emotions. You could really say there are two men in this movie. One before Christ and one after. E> I think Fireproof is the most emotional that Sherwood has done. The range of emotion that all the characters go through, is just amazing. It think the Kendrick brothers have really hit on something here. There’s some real core, almost you don’t want to face it in yourself, kind of emotions. They just touched on those really beautifully. L> So, Stephen, obviously you’re busy now with launching this movie and book, but do you have an inkling as to what’s next? S> Well, Alex has a few ideas, and I have a few ideas. We’re actually thinking about doing a movie about a girl who writes for a Christian website. She interviews artists, actors and writers, and she’s also a worship leader. We want someone who looks a lot like you. L> HA HA Well, call me up, I’m available! S> We know there’s a difference between a good idea and a God idea. We’ve found that everyone has a movie plot idea. We had a season of prayer for Fireproof, and we knew it was the God idea. We’re praying for the God idea.
