Love Takes Wing, starring Sarah Jones, Haylie Duff, Lou Diamond Phillips and Erin Cotrell, is the seventh movie in the Love Comes Softly series by Janette Oke.

After the unexpected death of her husband, Dr. Belinda Simpson (Sarah Jones) moves to the town of Sikeston, accompanied by her best friend, Dr. Annie Nelson (Haylie Duff ), to become the town’s doctor. Upon becoming the town’s doctor, Belinda is faced with two difficult situations. The first being some of the town’s people are not in support of a woman doctor and doubt her capabilities. The second situation is the unknown illness that most of the children at the town orphanage, as well as some of the town’s people, have fallen ill to or even died from. Belinda, along with her friend Annie, try their best to care for the the children at the orphanage and the town’s people. At the same time, while trying to figure out the cause of the mysterious illness, they end up battling the town, especially one person. In particular, Ray Russell (Lou Diamond Phillips) tries to persuade the people of the town to shut down the orphanage to keep the illness from spreading.  Belinda soon learns that in order to save the orphanage, she not only has to deal with Ray or the town, but Mayor Evans (Patrick Duffy).  At first, Mayor Evans appears to be on her side, but then portrays some shady actions. Annie, the only friend Belinda can trust, must soon leave to take her role as doctor in another town. This leaves Belinda very discouraged. However, in true fashion of the Love Comes Softly series, Belinda slowly starts to realize she has a friend and possibly more in Lee Owens (Jordan Bridges), the town’s blacksmith.

So, it comes down to can Belinda properly diagnose the mysterious illness to save the orphanage from being shut down, win over the confidence of Sikeston, and figure out what the shady behavior of Mayor Evans is all about before it’s to late.  You’ll have to watch and see.
All in all, Love Takes Wing stays true to the form of the series with maybe one exception. That exception being the fact that Belinda now has blonde hair when in the previous movies her character was a brunette. Personally, I struggled to work past looking at the new blond Belinda and trying to make a connection with her. I’m still remembering the previous brunette Belinda I had grown to like. I realize this is a personal issue of mine and it might not bother you at all. Love Takes Wing is a feel good, lift your spirits and inspire you kind of movie. If you feel like curling up on your couch with a comfy blanket and a hot cup of cocoa to escape from the craziness of your life, I would definitely recommend Love Takes Wing to help you achieve that escape. It’s a good family film, as well as a classic chick flick all rolled into one, so you really can’t go wrong with that!

Purchase Love Takes Wing.
