Movie Review:  The Simpsons Movie

Before I say anything about the actual film here’s a disclaimer, don’t take your young kids. My husband and I really wanted to see this film, and no babysitter was to be found. We thought to ourselves, “she’s nearly nine and how bad can it be?” So we took our whole family and well, I wouldn’t suggest it. There are a few scenes I really didn’t think she needed to see, but having put out that disclaimer, this movie was good.

If you loved The Simpson’s, you’ll love their movie. Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpson’s, has delivered a film with all that we love about The Simpson’s. The basis of the plot is a crisis situation involving pollution in Springfield’s lake. As a Pentecostal I got a little concerned when Grandpa started “prophesying” at church. But actually, Grandpa becomes the Cassandra of the film by foretelling all that will happen. Of course Marge is the only one who takes his “genuine religious experience” seriously (including grandpa). As the worst hits Springfield, Bart reaches out to Flanders. For those of you who know the show, Flanders is the ever present fundamentalist. Most of the time he stands as the butt of many jokes, this movie is no different, but you see more of his strengths in the movie. For a short while he even makes a dent in Bart’s rebellious temperament.

The movie is for old and new fans. It made fun of every group, conservatives, liberals, Christians, nonchristians, the old, the young, and the stupid (aka Homer) - no one was safe. The characters grow a little, but not enough to change a great thing.  I even enjoyed the credits, because they showed pictures of all the characters each voice actor portrays (I think I just confirmed my dorkiness). This will be a truly quotable movie, and who knows maybe you’ll pick up your dog and play spider pig like I did too. ☺
