DVD Review - License to Wed
Movie Title: License to Wed
I saw this movie in the #1 position in the top worst movies of 2007 just recently. The critic that reviewed the movie said that it was boring and uninventive. I will agree that Robin Williams seems to have left all of his innovation in humor back in the 70’s, but I truly enjoy Mandy Moore - she’s sweet and fresh. I must say she was the only reason why I finished Because I Said So, and truth be told though the real reason I wanted to see this movie was, John Krasinski. For those of you who are mourning the writers strike mainly because there are no new episodes of The Office, this is the movie for you. There are cameos by Mindy Kaling (aka Kelly Kapoor), Angela Kinsey (aka Angela Martin), and Brian Baumgartner (aka Kevin Malone). As for the plot line: Boy meets Girl, Boy dates Girl, Boy moves in with Girl, Boy asks Girl to marry him, after which everything goes crazy. Most of the movie tries for fast paced crazy comedy relying chiefly on random things that come from Robin Williams and putting the two love birds into insane situations that also arise from Williams. The humor in this movie doesn’t always pan out (which is why it landed on the top of the worst movies list), but inside of it is a truly innovative idea. Couples must deal with real issues to have a strong marriage. Reverend Frank’s child assistant said it best when he reminded the couple that people who had lived with each other before marriage had a higher rate of divorce. Through the sometimes insane process that Reverend Frank takes the couple through he forces them to acknowledge underlying tensions that will follow them into marriage. Every couple has to deal with their own issues and by looking at them and dealing with them before you tie the knot you will have a much greater chance of surviving the world of marriage. In my opinion this movie is worth a rental, it will make you laugh a little, and I love the concept of the marriage counseling (though I am glad that I didn’t have to live through a Reverend Frank to get married.) One scene did bother me a little as a spirit filled Christian, Reverend Frank pretends to heal Ben Murphy and then later quips “it never works, but wouldn’t it be cool if it did.” What can I say except I’m sorry for them?

Great review Lauren. I agree. That was the only part that bothered me a little too. I didn’t mind him pretending to heal the guy, as I could see one of us pulling the same stunt, but the line about it never working, struck a nerve.
