Arms of Deliverance: A Story of Promise - Tricia Goyer
Author: Tricia Goyer
Katrine is living a lie – really a Jew, her blonde hair and fair features allow her to masquerade as Aryan, the German epitome of racial purity. Fear and loneliness drive her into the arms of a high-ranking Nazi officer who works in the Office for Race and Settlement, where he selects children with Aryan features from German-occupied lands and places them with German families for re-indoctrination. When Katrine reveals her pregnancy, she is shocked when Hendrick sends her to live in a Lebensborn home, where she joins other “honored” mothers of the Third Reich, meant to perpetuate the Aryan ideal by giving birth to the children of suitable Nazi fathers. All of Katrine’s illusions are shattered as her eyes are opened to the horrifying reality that she was selected to increase Hendrick’s power and prestige by giving him a “perfect” Aryan son. She is left with one burning desire – to rescue her child from his predetermined future. In New York City, Mary Kelley and Lee O’Donnelly are rival reporters working to prove themselves in a field long-dominated by men. Mary, the poor, illegitimate daughter of a newspaper editor, longs to rise above her hardscrabble background and gain respect as a top reporter. Lee was born to privilege and utilizes every society contact to the utmost advantage. Longing to prove themselves, both women apply for coveted overseas assignments, never expecting to have their lives profoundly changed by the bravery and suffering they encounter on the battlefield. While Lee heads to the frontlines, Mary gains permission to join a B-17 bombing crew on a mission to Berlin. When the plane is shot down, Mary and Eddie, the navigator, are stranded in enemy territory – could their precarious position be the answer Katrine has prayed for? Tricia Goyer’s writing is crisp, compelling, and richly detailed, masterfully re-creating a pivotal time in world history. Each character’s emotions and actions ring true thanks to her meticulous research and the extensive interviews. The fast-paced action is balanced by great emotional depth as lives are profoundly changed in the crucible of conflict. Mary and Lee’s journeys especially resonated with me – it is all too easy to simply focus on oneself and how each situation you encounter impacts you and you alone. Goyer takes her characters on a journey of spiritual awakening that opens their eyes to life beyond themselves and how God can use people in spite of their fears and weaknesses to reveal His grace and mercy.
