Aaron Shust - Whispered & Shouted
Producer: Dan Hannon Little did anyone know that in late 2005, a little known worship leader would quietly release his debut solo album on the then-unheard-of Brash Music label. A few months later, this worship leader would release a little ditty called “My Savior My God”. Not long after the release of that song, Aaron Shust would become a household name in Christian music circles and “My Savior My God” would spend no less than a half a year on top of the charts in 2006. His debut album, Anything Worth Saying didn’t receive the kinds of receptions from critics, but it still sold quite well nonetheless due to the success of that one song. Shust would go on to win three Dove Awards in early 2007 (New Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year). Now, two years after the release of his debut, Shust is releasing Whispered & Shouted - again quietly and without much fanfare. Trying not to completely copy his debut, Shust moves from the quieter, guitar based pop of his debut and heads towards a more experimental sound this time. Unfortunately, the end result ends up sounding a bit too experimental and not enough memorable melodies or lyrical hooks to keep the listener coming back. While songs like the driving “Long Live the King” or “Life Itself” show some major potential - others like the bland “Worthy/Let All I Do” and “Create Again” almost feel like Shust is reverting back to the same old cliched writer that he was before. This is a problem that Shust falls into more often than not - and it is especially hard for worship leaders these days. Shust shows some great strides on Whispered & Shouted that he has what it takes to be a talented, cutting edge artist. Unfortunately, this album doesn’t offer enough of that.
