J Moss - Just James
Producer: Paul “pda” Allen and J Moss J Moss, the undeniably talented producer and Gospel music superstar, suffered his own personal hell in 2008. News hit the Gospel music community of Moss’ affair and a bitter trial involving a Georgia woman and a paternity test. Moss’ fans rallied around the downtrodden singer to restore and renew the troubled musician. J Moss is back with Just James - a rousing Gospel album that fits well with Moss’ previous recordings - but also finds the singer/songwriter in a much more personal and introspective place. J Moss’ first two releases featured much more glitz and glamor - extremely heavily produced with layer upon layer of Urban and Hip Hop flavor. It seems that Moss has toned things down a bit for release - as it not only feels like a more solid, urban or R&B release - it also is lacking the major guest appearances that past Moss albums have included. Many of these songs are more laid back than on previous recordings - such as the worshipful “Anointing” and beautiful acoustic ballad “Restored.” “Sweet Jesus” continues in that vein with its worship aspect as well. There’s also still a fair share of J Moss’ pop and synthesized moments - such as “I Gave It Up” with its Gospel-tinged dance style and “Holy One” which features a head-nodding and groove filled contemporary Gospel jive. “No More” has a very impressive and commercial sound - not unlike something you’d hear on Top 40 radio. Lyrically, Just James is chock full of emotional honesty and redemptive qualities. The listener can feel the pain in Moss’ voice - but most importantly - can hear the power of Grace on the singer’s every word. Very few albums can capture those elements (another such album is Michael English’s The Prodigal Comes Home) - and J Moss’ Just James features those qualities in spades. Track listing: RATING:
