Future of Forestry - Travel II

Future of Forestry blew everyone out of the water when the band originally debuted in 2004 as Something Like SIlas on Sparrow Records.  The band’s debut was a breath of fresh air for the Christian music community - but things eventually went sour and several of the members formed Future of Forestry (including frontman and primary arranger/songwriter/producer Eric Owyoung).  The band’s debut record - Twilight - was heralded as one of the best Christian music releases of the year, and the band followed that up with the Advent Christmas EP.  Front man and producer Eric Owyoung has been on a spiritual and musical journey this past year - and he’s taken the listener along for a ride as well.  Future of Forestry released the first Travel EP this past May - and last September released Travel II - the second in a three part Travel series.  Travel II continues down the path that was set with Travel - emotive and striking vocals paired with fantastically arranged and performed alternative rock that would put most of the band’s contemporaries to shame.  Travel II gleans influences from all areas of music - recalling the likes of everyone from OneRepublic to The Shins and Fleet Foxes to Coldplay - a smathering of musical influences and styles.  Much of Travel II features a World Music percussive background that really sets the band apart - most notably found on cuts like the striking opening tune “Hills of Indigo Blue” and “So Close So Far.”  “Holiday” is probably the hardest cut on the disc - but even it has a nice hook to it.  “Set Your Sails” is another album highlight with its layers of background vocals and intricate arrangement.  Overall, Travel II takes what was established with Travel and takes it to far greater levels.  Travel II is by far one of the most interesting and beautifully arranged pieces of art released this year.
