Seabird - Rocks Into Rivers
Producer: Matt Hales There’s no denying that I have an affinity for sweet, piano-based pop/rock. So, it was no surprise that critically-acclaimed rock band Seabird was an instant hit with me. The band didn’t attain the kind of huge fan base that a band of their caliber should have at this point - but fans have been given an opportunity to hear new music from the band with the release of Rocks Into Rivers on Credential Recordings (Switchfoot, Future of Forestry). The album kicks off with the extremely accessible and radio-friendly “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful” - which is already becoming a favorite at Christian radio. “Sing to Save My Life” features a swelling and climactic ending, while “Trust” features even more of a pop-friendly sound that will keep listeners equally engaged. “This Ain’t Home” has a nice Brit-rock accompaniment that would make Coldplay proud. “Baby I’m In Love” features what is perhaps the most intriguing melody, while “The Sound of You and I” utilizes new instrumentation including a vibrant Americana backdrop that creates a fantastic pop love song. “This Road” features an epic accompaniment, while “Rocks Into Rivers” is another album highlight featuring a darker musical accompaniment. There’s a definitive shift from the first half of the disc (which features the more light and pop moments) and the second half (taking on more epic and dramatic song structures). This was a nice change of pace for the band and shows that they are capable of more than just juicy pop goodies. Lyrically, Seabird, like on their debut, teeter back and forth between love of their Savior and romance. This is often seen in bands that are trying to make an impact in both areas. Seabird does a great job - but honestly the band seems more at home talking about romantic relationships - especially seen on “The Sound of You and I,” “This Road,” and “Baby I’m In Love.” “Finally Done Right” is a bit of an odd tribute to Michael Jackson - but Seabird pulls it off pretty well. “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful” remains a favorite of this reviewer due to its catchy hook and beautiful lyrics - but there’s so much to love here that it’s hard to choose a favorite. Rocks Into Rivers is nowhere near a sophomore slump. Seabird continues to be the band to watch. RATING:
