Cindy Morgan - Hymns: Some Glad Morning
Producer: Cindy Morgan When beloved singer/songwriter Cindy Morgan set out to record her next record - it was meant to be a recording of some of her most loved songs (which her fans chose) - only in brand new, re-imagined styles. However, Cindy announced that she had decided instead to release an album with a similar concept - only with hymns instead of songs from her own catalog. The result is Hymns: Some Glad Morning - a hymns release like only Cindy Morgan can produce. Cindy has gradually been heading down the road of pop music with pure Americana and Country flavor. Her last record - Beautiful Bird - was a great mix of the piano-based alternative pop of her Listen record and the more organic sounds of Postcards. Hymns: Some Glad Morning continues down that path again - and these hymns sound right at home in the style that can only be dubbed as purely-Cindy. The album kicks off with an infectious, Country-fied version of “I’ll Fly Away” - with Cindy’s own reworking of the melody to appeal to today’s audiences. “Our Father” finds Cindy tackling “The Lord’s Prayer” in typical Cindy ballad style with piano and cello accompaniment - a song that could easily be found on Listen or Elementary. “Jesus Joy/Sweet Hour Prayer” is beautiful rendition of the beloved hymn that features an undercurrent of the classical piece “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desire.” “My Ransom” is a beautiful tribute to “His Wounds Have Paid My Ransom” which features an acappella arrangement with layers and layers of vocals all recorded by the talented vocalist. “Working On a Building” would have fit nicely alongside “Lay Me Down” from Postcards and has a real O Brother! Where Are Thou feel to it with it’s old school, Black Gospel blues sound. There are several new tunes that don’t feel a bit out of place. “I Come” was paired with “Just As I Am” and the two fit seamlessly together. Her new rendition of the now-classic Easter tune “Praise the King” is a breath-taking number that trumps the original by far - and pairing it with an instrumental “Amazing Grace” only showed just how strong the song really is. “Worry” is another upbeat, Country tune that Cindy pulls off flawlessly - and shows hints of the Beautiful BIrd feel. The real album highlight comes in “Well Done” - a song that has a similar feel and tone to “Praise the King” - only speaking of what we hope to hear the Father say to us - rather than a song of praise and adoration to a risen Savior. Cindy’s vocals are once again top-notch, and the new feel of layering the background vocals really fills the sound out and makes for some interesting arrangements. The real strength here isn’t in the arrangements or Cindy’s always impeccable vocals - it’s in the songwriting, and those that have come to love Cindy mainly love her for her heartfelt lyrics and clever melodies. Her skills as a songwriter are even more showcased here as these originals are set side-by-side songs that have endured the years as classics of the church. The album flows so well that the listener has a hard time even figuring out which are the hymns and which are Cindy originals. If you’ve been a fan of Cindy over the years and have appreciated her growth as a songwriter and musician - then Hymns: Some Glad Morning should be a welcome addition to your library. Cindy continues to make the best music of her career. She’s a veteran singer/songwriter/musician - and at this point - she just makes it look way too easy. Track listing: 1. I’ll Fly Away RATING:
