Joe Kisselburgh left the band Falling Up in 2006 to sort out his life and figure out if music was what he wanted to do after all.  After some soul searching, Kisselburgh decided that music was definitely for him, and he began to write and record an album featuring him on all instruments (except drums and keyboards) and wrote every song as well.  After starting a band and naming themselves The Send, the band signed with Tooth & Nail Records, the Christian music industry’s leading label for rock and hard acts.  Cosmos, the band’s debut, is a nice fit for the label, as the band tackles some of the multiple sounds in rock such as ambient melodic rock with emo and alt-pop thrown in for good measure.  Musically, it’s a nice blend of today’s rock made popular by acts like Dashboard Confessional and splashes of Coldplay.  Lyrically, Kisselburgh focuses on the need for redemption from God and God’s love.  There are some fine moments - such as “Need”, “Fire Colors”, and “Say” - that match lyrical quality with brilliant musical moments.  However, The Send also misses the boat on a couple numbers such as “An Epiphany”, “In Repose”, and “The Science of the Sky”.  These numbers don’t quite fit lyrically with the rest of the album.  Overall, The Send is a nice enough debut that will surely catch the attention of fans of melodic rock and alt-pop.  It may not get everything right, but Cosmos does get it right where it really matters.

Purchase Cosmos.
