Cry of the Afflicted - The Unveiling
Producer: Jeff Schneeweis
This is the first release for Cry of The Afflicted from Solid State Records. Which confuses me a little, because Solid State is the Hardcore/Metal arm of Tooth and Nail. In my opinion Cry of The Afflicted is more of a modern rock band with a touch of emo. There are only a couple of times where it heads off to hardcore territory. 30 Seconds to Mars comes to mind when I hear this group. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Musically, there is nothing new here. If you have heard any emo band playing on the radio or Fuse TV, then you have heard these Canadian (eh?) rockers. I will say that the vocals are good, and it sounds like they accomplished this without using much distortion. Lyrically, its a solid album. I would of missed some of the better songs if I hadn’t listened to it a few times. I say this because the album just sounds like one continous song without any changes. The song “Lift the Veil” challenges you not to take this world at face value. Tracks like “Heed the Sound” and “Penetrate, Illuminate” are good anthems songs for young christians. They are self effacing songs declaring that they will die to themselves and increase Jesus’s name and “..give hope for the hopeless.”, “Message of fire! A light in the dark!”. They both got me pumped and will probably go on a mix cd. Their most relevant song, in my opinion, is “Self Defiance”. With an insight like “I am walking on the easiest path and I know it leads to nothing. Lead me to the route you made for me.”, it causes you to rethink what you are doing with your life: career wise, personal, and spiritual. Is this the life that God wants for you? Are you taking the safe route or the more glamorous route instead of the one that God had predestined for you to take?
