Shane & Shane - Pages
Producer: Will Hunt
There’s no denying the impact that Shane & Shane, the pop-acoustic duo made up of Shane Barnard & Shane Everett, have had on the college community. Their brand of vertically based introspective folk music has earned them quite a following. The band has released several well-received albums nationally, including their breakthrough albums Psalms and Carry Away. After the release of 2004’s Clean - the duo went through a self-described time of “painful self-examination” - and the result is a redefined sound and mission from the duo. Don’t be scared - all of the trademark elements of a Shane & Shane record are ever-present on Pages, their first new studio album in three years. However, what is also present is a sense that the guys are back with a more established outlook of who they are as musicians and ministers of the Gospel. Pages kicks off with the sweet ballad “Vision of Love” which quickly leads into more interesting cuts like the Shadrach, Meshach and Abendego inspired “Burn Us Up” or the quirkiness of “Beg” and “Holiday.” The duo tries out country and bluegrass on the album highlight “Psalm 62” and radio-friendly pop on “We Love You Jesus” and “When I Think About the Lord”. The truth of the matter is that Pages doesn’t deviate too far from the norm for these guys, but it does show the duo trying on new hats and styles, many of which work mightily well for the guys. It’s hard to not at least appreciate everything that comes out of the Shane & Shane camp, because they are just too good at what they do. Even their bad albums are better than 90% of what is coming out of the Christian music community. Pages may not go down as classics like Psalms or Carry Away - but it’s definitely a step above their last studio album.
