Caedmon’s Call - Overdressed

image

Producer:  Caedmon’s Call
Record Label:  INO Records
Website:  http://www.caedmonscall.com

The funny thing about reviewing a Caedmon’s Call album is the need to mention Derek Webb in some way, and vice versa.  Despite the two being two totally different artists now, one can’t help but be compelled to mention the other, whether in passing or mentioning the historic significance that each have played in their respective careers.  The unique thing about reviewing the new Caedmon’s Call record Overdressed is that one does get to mention Webb, but in a new light this time around.  After spending a few years on his own, Webb has returned to the Caedmon’s Call fold (at least for this record and tour).  The result?  Well, it’s about what you’d expect.  In the time that Webb has been absent from the group, Caedmon’s Call has created both arguably their best album (Share the Well) and arguably their worst album (In the Company of Angels II).  So the end result of Overdressed is right in the middle of those two albums.  It’s a hefty step forward for the band since their last album, and even keeps up the tradition of utilizing world music elements that Share the Well helped establish.  Overdressed is a mixture of past pop-folk albums (a la 40 Days) and their most recent influences from working with Compassion International overseas.  The first half of the recording tends to drag and be less interesting.  Songs like “Need Your Love”, “Sacred”, and “There Is a Reason” are nowhere near the band’s best work - but once the listener reaches the second half of the recording, they are greeted with some of the finest songs to ever come out of the Caedmon’s Call camp - such as “Hold the Light”, “Two Weeks In Africa”, and “All Across the Western World”.  It’s hard to imagine that Caedmon’s Call has managed to stay as relevant as they have in their 10 plus years in the industry.  Overdressed definitely won’t go down as one of the band’s most memorable in terms of musicality, but it will surely be remembered as a nice re-introduction to the band with one of their best attributes - Derek Webb.
