DeWayne Woods & When Singers Meet - Introducing DeWayne Woods & When Singers Meet

image

DeWayne Woods & When Singers Meet is a new group on the Gospel music landscape. DeWayne Woods earned his dues while singing with Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers and being mentored by none other than Gospel music great John P. Kee. The question remains - did DeWayne learn the right kinds of things to make him a full-fledged Gospel music star. Introducing DeWayne Woods & When Singers Meet is a strong debut effort that showcases Woods’ knack for creating that great Gospel tune. Upbeat tunes like “Strong Tower”, “Made a Way”, and “God Is” (featuring the Tri-City Singers) are three of the stronger cuts on the recording - showcasing great arrangments and even stronger vocal performances. However, those three songs are about where the upbeat moments end - as Introducing… is full of medium-tempo cuts and slow ballads. There are some definite memorable moments in the ballad territory - specifically the testimony based “I Am Healed” and the strikingly beautiful ballad “Let Go”. Slower numbers like “Sunshine” and “You Shall Reap” - while nice cuts - seem to bog the album down a bit. Introducing is a strong debut effort from Woods - but it will be interesting to see where this recording takes him. The really memorable moments on the disc are the upbeat songs, and Woods should take note that that is his biggest strength. Fans of artists like Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers or old-school Kirk Franklin will surely find a lot to love in this recording.
