GRITS - Redemption
GRITS has been “going mainstream” for a while now. That’s not a knock to the popular rap duo - but how many times can we hear that the group will be releasing a mainstream album only to see the group once again sticking to their guns and releasing music to the Christian sub-culture. Once again, GRITS is releasing their latest release Redemption through Gotee Records and to Christian outlets. Much like previous commercial hits like The Art of Translation and the Dichotomy projects - Redemption is the Christian response to the “dirty south” style of hip hop - especially on more party favorable tracks like “Holla @ Ya”, “We Workin’” and “ Heyyy”. Even lyrically, the duo seems to keep it mostly superficial - most notably on the cut “Memories” which boasts about the pleasures of living in the south. “Ambitions” is probably the most mature lyrically - stating the duo’s frustrations with being a creative group in a stifling Christian music industry. Despite its lack of seriousness - the album does feature some heavy-hitters in the guest artist department - most notably Pigeon John and the talented underground rapper Canibus. GRITS fans should find a lot to enjoy on Redemption, but fans of more serious artistic and lyrical expressions in their hip hop should probably stick to more daring artists like Mars Ill, 4th Avenue Jones, or L.A. Symphony. RATING:
