Matt Redman - Beautiful News
It’s unfortunate that Matt Redman hasn’t had the huge breakout kind of success that longtime friend and label mate Chris Tomlin has recieved. I mean, after all, he was a key part of the major shift in the modern worship movement over the last few years as a large part of the Passion conferences and tours. Not to mention the worship leader has penned some of the most interesting, thought-provoking, and popular worship songs as of late - like “Blessed Be Your Name”, “The Heart of Worship”, and “Better Is One Day” - just to name a few. However, despite the early success as a songwriter, Redman has really failed to connect in recent years despite “You Never Let Go” being a moderate size hit from the Passion series this last year. Beautiful News is Redman’s latest release, and the album clearly shows Redman is making strides to be the leader that he once was, despite the major disappointments of his last few albums like Where Angels Fear to Tread and Facedown. The songs are just that much more memorable this time around. Lyrically, he’s just as strong as ever - most notably on tunes like “Yes and Amen” and “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made” (despite it’s overly simplistic melody). “Thank You For Healing Me” is another extremely strong cut, and it will more than likely resonate the best among listeners due to it’s strong melodic hook and relatable lyrics. There are few minor misteps - especially on the radio cut “You Never Let Go” which has two strikingly different melodies between the verses and the chorus. “Take It to the Streets” - while a nice pop/rock tune - really sticks out in terms of cohesiveness musically. The song is probably better suited for an album by someone like Delirious?. Overally, Beautiful News has the potential to be Redman’s big break if the label decides to release the right songs at the right times. Let’s hope they recognize the potential in this recording.
