Monk & Neagle - The Twenty-First Time
Producer: Ed Cash
It’s been three years since we’ve heard from the popular acoustic-based duo Monk & Neagle. They managed to create quite a stir with their self-titled debut on Flicker Records in 2004 - much do to the success of their catchy melodies, strong vocals, and the support of radio singles like “All I Need” and the smash hit “Dancing With the Angels.” If you are looking for some sort of drastic musical growth since the duo’s self-titled release, The Twenty-First Time probably won’t be your cup of tea. Since Provident’s buying of Flicker Records, Monk & Neagle have now moved over to the more appropriate label of Reunion Records. The Twenty-First Time features more of the same styles from the group. They are still singing cutesy love songs in the vein of Jack Johnson or John Mayer with the sacred songs thrown in as well. In fact, Monk & Neagle seem to be a more focused outfit this time around - taking on the topic of serving those who have less than us - most notably on cuts like “The Twenty-First Time” or “More Than That.” The group also tugs at the heart strings with the story-based “What Soldier’s Do” - an emotional tribute to fathers who serve in the armed forces. The pop/acoustic duo also tackles praise and worship with the appropriately titled “Hallelujah, Jesus.” Though there’s not much musical growth this time around, Monk & Neagle does the acoustic based pop well, and they can compete with any of the popular artists today in terms of musicality. Catchy pop hooks are in overabundance on The Twenty-First Time - like on songs “Beautiful You”, “Wonderful Angel”, “Fallin’”, and “Stars Would Fall (I’m Crazy") (which was also included on their debut). Overall, fans of the group’s first album will surely love every bit of The Twenty-First Time. They are definitely good at what they do. RATING:
