Jars of Clay - Christmas Songs

Producer:  Jars of Clay

Anyone who has even remotely followed the career of Jars of Clay knows that they are huge fans of Christmas music.  In fact, the group has wanted to create a full-length Christmas recording ever since they signed with Essential Records in the mid-90’s.  However, the issue was a source of contention between the label and the band, and Essential only let them release the three-song Drummer Boy EP in 1996.  Now that the band has left the popular label and started their own indie label through Nettwerk Music Group, they feel more freedom to make the music they’ve always wanted to - and that includes Christmas Songs - their first full-length Christmas recording.  Christmas Songs is exactly the kind of album that one would expect a band like Jars of Clay to make.  They’ve created something inbetween classic and modern - something only a few artists have been able to do.  Not only is the album full of modern takes on Christmas classics like “O Little Town of Bethlehem”, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”, “In the Bleak Midwinter”, and “I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day” - but the band also pulled from the obscure like “Gabriel’s Message” and “Love Came Down at Christmas”.  The bands clever spin on Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” and Charlie Brown theme “Christmastime I Here” add some new life into the classic songs, while original numbers from the band like the haunting “The GIft of St. Cecilia”, “Hibernation Day”, and “Peace Is Here” add new charm to the already festive season.  Musically, the album should be popular with fans of the album Redemption Songs with its more classic feel to songs with moments of sheer genius thrown in for good measure.  Overall, Christmas Songs will no doubt be one of Christian music’s most memorable Christmas recordings.

Purchase Christmas Songs.
