Joann Rosario - Joyous Salvation
Producer: Aaron W. Lindsey, Fred Jerkins III, Chris Rodriguez
Joann Rosario is no stranger to the Gospel music arena. This power-singer/songwriter found her place as a part of Fred Hammond’s Radical for Christ before releasing her debut solo album, More, More More back in 2002. In 2005, Rosario released Now More Than Ever...Worship, a worship based recording that helped establish herself even more as one of Gospel music’s next great vocalists. Now, the popular vocalist is back with Joyous Salvation, a soulful and r&b laced Gospel album that fans of this style will love. Joann recalls the likes of Yolanda Adams, Karen Clark-Sheard, or Martha Munizzi - though never quite reaching the level of those acclaimed vocalists. Sure, she’s got some extremely impressive vocals, but she doesn’t quite reach the power levels of some of Gospel music’s top female performers. Joyous Salvation is a strong mix of Gospel-infused numbers and worship oriented moments. For instance, “Restore to Me”, “Come On Everybody”, and “Glory to You” are strong radio-friendly Gospel numbers, while the Yolanda Adams-esque “You Are Holy” and “Beautiful Son” show Rosario at her finest with their big and grand ballad arrangements. Also, “Traces” and “There Is a City” are urban numbers not unlike something CeCe Winans or Mary Mary would create. There are some really nice moments to be found, but ultimately it feels like Rosario was being timid and restrained a bit on this release. Hopefully, the next few outings will show Rosario living up to the expectations that most of us have for her.
