Connersvine - Connersvine
Producer: Ben Shive, Pete Kipley
I think it’s hard to deny the fact that INO Records has officially become one of the major labels in the industry, if not the biggest label in Christian music today. The label had some humble beginnings - helping to break artists like MercyMe and Sara Groves. Today, the label boasts an eclectic mix of artists, everyone from Skillet to Sandi Patty and CeCe Winans to Flyleaf. The label has also helped break other acts like Phil Wickham, Echoing Angels, The Afters, 33Miles, and more. The labels latest new artist signing is Connersvine - a pop/rock duo made up of singer/songwriter Chris Wilson and Indianapolis Colts punter Hunter Smith. Obviously, the duo has created quite a stir due to the success of Smith as a member of the popular football team - but the question remains whether or not Connersvine can stand on their own two feet without the help of Smith’s success as an athlete. The answer is yes and no. Connersvine, the album, is a strong debut effort from the duo. The pop/rock sound is not unlike something you’d hear from label mates MercyMe or Steven Curtis Chapman. They make this kind of music well, though nothing really stands out too far from the pack. The group’s more worship-oriented moments recalls the likes of Shane & Shane or Chris Tomlin - which will sell well and do good on radio - but again - doesn’t stand out from the pack too much. That’s not to say that Connersvine isn’t good at what they do - “Hero”, “Closely Far Away”, and “Glory Be” are all great songs. The most interesting part of Connersvine is the country influenced “Lay Down” and “Overflow.” Connersvine is definitely a solid album, but nothing that would keep people coming back for more. Hopefully the band can get a little more creative and find their own niche before the next release.
