Christmas music is a great passion for many people. For some artists, the release of a holiday recording seems like a natural progression for the artist (think Amy Grant, Phillips Craig & Dean, Avalon, or Point of Grace’s releases), while for some artists, a holiday release seems a bit odd. For instance, Rebecca St. James’ release, while fantastic, seemed odd at the time considering her musical style at the time. When Relient K released Deck the Halls, Bruise Your Hand a couple years ago - it too left some people scratching their heads. The 10 song special release was a fantastic collection of new and old songs, and it showed that Relient K was more than capable of making a fantastically themed album. Now with Capitol Records, the band is re-releasing those 10 tracks and adding seven more songs and renaming the album Let It Snow Baby...Let It Reindeer. The ten previous songs have stood up over the last few years, and the six new tracks ("In Like a Lion” was originally found on the band’s Apathetic EP) also sit well among the previous material. Musically, one can see the band’s maturation over these last few years. The band seems a bit more serious on some of the newer songs - especially songs like “Boxing Day”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, and “Merry Christmas, Here’s to Many More” - showing the more romantic and happy times of the year. The band is still pretty zany too, especially noticeable on “I’m Gettin’ Nuttin’ For Christmas.” Overall, it’s always fun to find an incredible Christmas album that you weren’t expecting to be so great in the first place. Let It Snow Baby...Let It Reindeer may not be the most perfect of all holiday recordings, but it is definitely one you won’t want to miss out on.
