Kirk Franklin - The Fight of My Life
Producer: Kirk Franklin for Fo Yo Soul Entertainment
There aren’t many people who can deny the impact that Kirk Franklin has had on not only Gospel music, but also other forms of Christian music as well - such as pop, hip hop, and mainstream r&b and soul. Franklin has managed to break down barriers that have been up between both Black Gospel and Christian music as well as mainstream music and Christian music. The Fight of My Life is Franklin’s latest release and follow-up to his critically-acclaimed Hero album. The Fight of My Life continues down the path that Franklin’s past efforts have - fusing different styles together to form a sound all his own. This album features everything from traditional Gospel ("He Will Supply” and “Chains"), contemporary Gospel ("Declaration (This Is It!)”, pop/rock ("I Am God"), urban/r&b ("Help Me Believe"), pop ("Still In Love"), old-school soul ("Little Boy” and “Hide Me"), hip hop ("I Like Me") and much more. If this was any other artist, the album would feel uneven and unbalanced - but because of Franklin’s knack for melding styles - The Fight of My Life is a musical triumph. Lyrically, Franklin again provides hope and a message of healing to his audience - especially on cuts like “Help Me Believe”, “Jesus”, “Chains”, and “I Am God”. “A Whole Nation” - while a bit awkward musically - features a strong call out to a new generation of kids and the issues they face. Franklin has continued to defy expectations with the release of The Fight of My Life. The album does not disappoint, and it will more than likely continue to break down barriers between different areas of music.
