Kevin Max - The Blood
Producer: Will Owsley & Kevin Max
Kevin Max seems to have come full-circle it seems. It’s hard to mention Max’s career without mentioning his tenure with Christian music’s most memorable band - dc talk. After the group broke up, Max - who was the most identifiable voice of the group - went a more artistic route with his music while Toby Mac and Tait went more commercial. Stereotype Be was considered a very strong piece of art - and Max went on to release Between the Fence & the Universe and The Imposter which featured more indie sounding modern rock and even more abstract lyrics. Now, Max is releasing The Blood - a much more traditional based album, both musically and lyrically, that also feature a slew of big name guest stars as well. The album kicks off with “The Old Rugged Cross” - where it sounds like Max is channeling the spirit of Johnny Cash before kicking into the pop-oriented “The Blood” which features dc talk. The rock feel of “Run On for a Long Time” is an album highlight that also features American Idol’s Chris Sligh in one of his finest vocal performances to date. The Blood is both modern and traditional in it’s sound - which is the goal Max set forth for the record - to honor the music that would influence and lay the ground work for the art that he creates today. “Up Above My Head” (featuring Vince Gill and Amy Grant) is traditional country, while “People Get Ready” features Erica Campbell of Mary Mary on a traditional Gospel number. Overall, The Blood is a striking combination of the modern ("The Blood”, “Run On For a Long Time") with the traditional ("The Old Rugged Cross”, “Up Above My Head") that Max pulls of amazingly well. This was the record that Max was born to create. RATING:
