Ronnie Freeman - God Speaking
Producer: Nathan Nockels & Mark Hammond
Anyone who has been a consistent reader of this site knows how impressed I was with Ronnie Freeman’s debut recording - simply titled Ronnie Freeman - on Rocketown Records. The artist quickly won me over with his impressive vocal skills coupled with a strong hand in songwriting. It’s been five years since that album released, and it’s given Freeman time to serve as a worship leader at a local Nashville church and hone his skills as one of the industry’s premier songwriters. Freeman has now returned on his own label (White Apron) with distribution through indie juggernaut KOCH Records. God Speaking is an impressive follow-up to his Rocketown Records debut, kicking off with eloquently written and equally musically engaging “God Speaking” before kicking into the pop overdrive of “Breakaway” and Billy Joel shuffle of “Love the Light.” God Speaking, musically, picks up where his debut left off - smart piano-based pop - not unlike something you’d hear from Scott Krippayne, Mark Schultz, Billy Joel, Michael W. Smith, or Jon McLaughlin. Vocally - Freeman is spot on as always - turning in big voice runs on the upbeat numbers like “Get There” and “No Changing That” while remaining extremely emotive on the moving ballads such as “Sober Me” and “The Only Thing (2007)”. Lyrically - Freeman is again at his best here - touching on subjects like hearing God ("God Speaking"), the beauty of conversion ("Love the Light"), resisting temptation ("Sober Me"), personal battles ("Breakaway"), and more. It’s not like there’s material on this album that hasn’t been covered before - but Freeman does it so well that there’s not much to gripe about. He’s one of Christian music’s most underrated vocalists and songwriters. Hopefully, God Speaking will earn him the audience he so much deserves.
