Justin Unger - Disengage
Producer: Greg Bieck
You may remember Justin Unger from his brief stint with pop/rock duo Across the Sky from a couple years ago. The duo promised many things, but their debut ultimately ended up too much like everything else hitting airwaves in Christian music. After the duo broke up, Unger stepped off the road and into full-time husband role. With that, he and his wife moved to Arizona to take a worship leader position at Heights Church. With the seal of approval from his church and staff there, Unger is releasing his debut solo album - Disengage. Disengage is a strong enough debut - but nothing overtly original either. Unger has stripped away any sign of the old Across the Sky sound, as Disengage is much more smart piano-based pop rather than radio friendly pop/rock. Recalling artists like Nate Sallie or Scott Krippayne and even lighter moments of Steven Curtis Chapman or Matthew West, Unger has produced a likeable sound, and with lyrical moments that are far better than Across the Sky’s debut, he should attain quite a following. The title cut, “Disengage” is by far the finest display of Unger’s writing ability - but he also shines on more worship filled moments like “Reach For Me”, “Taking Me Back”, and “Behold.” as well. The main problem with Disengage isn’t that it’s a bad record (other than some bad mixing here and there), it’s just that it’s all been done before, and Unger doesn’t bring much new to the table. Otherwise, it’s a strong enough debut and should whet the appetite of his fans.
