Newworldson - Salvation Station
Producer: Newworldson, Justin Koop
To say that new Inpop signee Newworldson is the most daring act on the label is quite an understatement. The label, which has been the home to more current sounding artists like Shane & Shane, Newsboys, Tree63, and more, has stretched themselves to to speak with the signing of Newworldson, a band that blends the sounds of the past with today’s pop quite well. Their debut album, Salvation Station, is a mix of neo-gospel, jazz, blues, rock, pop, and soul - not unlike what you’d hear from last year’s most talked about new artist Mike Farris with sprinklings of Stevie Wonder and early Ray Charles. Newworldson has a way of capturing the attention of the listener early on and not letting go of that attention until the end of the album - even on more cheesy sounding numbers like “Salvation Station” and “Working Man” - the band never lets up. Naysayers may listen and be uncomfortable with all the stylistic variances found on the band’s debut - yet the album never feels disjointed as each style seamlessly flows from one another from the blues sound of “Sweet Holy Sprit” to the rock of “Empty Heart” and the more pop oriented “Pledge of Allegiance.” Lyrically - the band tackles modern day trials and topics with a unique throwback writing style to the music they are honoring. They tackle everything from simple love songs to God ("Citybus Lovesong"), deciding between right and wrong ("Borderline"), and prayer ("Sweet Holy Spirit"). Though the writing is a bit simplistic at times - knowing the kind of style that they are trying to emulate here - that’s only a small complaint. I wish I could say that a band like Newworldson was going to be the next big band in Christian music - but unfortunately I don’t think they are a band that the masses are going to “get”. For the rest of us who enjoy well-crafted music, Newworldson’s Salvation Station will definitely be worth the time.
