Natalie Grant - Relentless
Producer: Bernie Herms, Shaun Shankel
Natalie Grant just recently became the biggest female artist in the Christian music community. She got her start in 1999 with the release of her self-titled debut for the now-defunct Benson Records. That album, which had its nice moments, was nothing more than pure AC/pop fluff. She then signed with the now-defunct Pamplin Records for Stronger which did little to help boost her career. With the release of Deeper Life on Curb Records in 2003 - Grant slowly started to make a name for herself and carve her own niche in the genre. 2005’s Awaken was the true watershed moment of her career - showing that Grant was more than just a big voiced diva - as she dealt with real life issues such as life’s heartaches, self image, and human trafficking. Well it’s been three long years since the release of that breakthrough recording (which has sold over 400,000 units to date) - and Natalie is finally following that album up with Relentless - an album that continues to show that Grant refuses to rest on her laurels as an artist, vocalist or songwriter. Producer by uber-producers Bernie Herms and Shaun Shankel, Relentless finds Grant hitting up modern pop made popular by the likes of Kelly Clarkson as well as her own trademark balladry with shades of Nichole Nordeman as well. From the opening strains of the all-out rocker “I Will Not Be Moved” - one knows that this isn’t your typical Diva pop record. Grant tackles everything from the aforementioned pop/rock to blues ("So Long"), modern r&b ("Make It Matter"), worship ("In Christ Alone") and her trademark ballads ("In Better Hands” and “Back at My Heart"). Natalie handles a lion’s share of the songwriting duties on this record - continuing to show her maturity as a songwriter and artist. She also gets some help from some of the best songwriters out there today - such as Matthew West, Christa Wells, Bernie Herms, Shaun Shankel, Sam Mizell, Ben Glover, and more. She touches on some weighty subjects again this time - everything from cutting ("Safe"), hope in hard time ("Our Hope Endures"), God’s love for all people ("Perfect People"), and surrender ("Let Go") to name just a few topics. Overall, it’s easy to say that Relentless is Natalie Grant’s strongest album to date. She’s growing as an artist in all the right place, and one can’t help but be eager to see where her career takes her next.
