I’ve been clamoring to review this CD ever since I got the copy of it back in April of 2007 from After Edmund’s publicist at GMA Week.  Their publicist and I have been good friends for a while, so I knew that I was to take her fawning over the band with a grain of salt - after all she was being paid to love them.  However, this is the same girl that had told me I was going to love acts like DecembeRadio and Charity Von too - and she was right then.  After pushing back the band’s release date at least two times that I know of, Slanted Records is finally releasing After Edmund’s stellar debut recording Hello.  The aptly titled debut album is an exceptional introduction to this band - made up of five guys who were all classically trained in college and who utilize their knowledge of music and music theory to grand proportions.  Hello isn’t the kind of album that jumps out at you upon first listen - rather layers and layers of sounds and instrumentation start to be uncovered the more intently you listen - such as the debut single “Come & Rain Down” - which may appear to be a catchy modern rock song upon first listen - but turns into a modern worship anthem with striking instrumentation underneath.  Musically - the band is euro-rock with Brit-rock influences as well - but they aren’t defined by those influences either - which is a rare feat indeed.  There’s just so much to love here, it’s hard to nail down highlights - but songs like “Clouds”, “Fighting For Your Heart (Let It Go)”, “Thank God”, and “Go Oboe!” have to surely be in consideration.  Lyrically, the band isn’t quite as poetic as one would think they could be - so there’s some room here for growth in that area.  Producer Scott Wilbanks (DecembeRadio, Third Day) and After Edmund have created an album that is unlike anything out there right now - and because of that the band may have a hard time capturing an audience with the radio-friendly crowd.  Hopefully that won’t be the case and the epic sound of After Edmund will be around for a long time.

Purchase Hello.
