Pillar - For the Love of the Game

Producer: Travis Wyrick

Pillar has always been the kind of band that has left people scratching their head with each release.  Like many other bands, Pillar stormed onto the Christian music scene with their rap/rock sound and quickly earned themselves a formidable fan base.  However, much like many other bands who came out at that time (see P.O.D. or Thousand Foot Krutch), Pillar has really been searching for a sound that they can identify with since the rap/rock phase has quickly vanished.  The group has covered everything from nu-metal and modern rock/alternative to hard rock and pop/rock - never sticking with one style for more than one album.  Even this time around, Pillar has again claimed a new sound for For the Love of the Game - the group’s fifth full-length release.  This time around - Pillar has adopted a more pop friendly metal base to their music - not at all unlike current music from Disciple or Red.  It’s easy to say that For the Love of the Game is the group’s best release since Fireproof - and the songs are just that much stronger - most notably the fast numbers like “For the Love of the Game”, “Turn It Up”, and “The Runaway.” Lyrically, the band kind of sticks to their guns - remaining pretty open about their faith - even taking on a more call to arms to believers to share the love of Christ to unbelievers (notably seen on tracks like “Reckless Youth”, the title track or “State of Emergency").  “Turn It Up” - while nonsensical at times - is a unique song that mentioned over 30 Christian rock artists songs or album titles throughout (not at all unlike T-Bone’s “Name Droppin’” from last year).  The sound should be a blast for fans of Christian rock.  Overall, For the Love of the Game may not go down as Pillar’s finest work to date - mostly because of the band’s penchant for adopting new styles with each release and some much needed growth in the lyrical department.  However, it’s nowhere near the band’s worst effort and should find the band attracting many more new fans.
