Fireflight - Unbreakable
Producer: Rob Hawkins
Fireflight debuted on the Christian music scene in 2006 with the release of the mildly accepted Healing of Harms. That album assured them a sizable following - though nothing to write home about either. They are following up that record with Unbreakable - a highly publicized album due to the title cut being the theme song to NBC’s failed drama remake Bionic Woman. The question stands as to whether or not Unbreakable lives up the hype. The answer is “not really.” Unbreakable is a nice enough follow-up to their debut. It’s a nice step forward for the band, but doesn’t really do much to set them apart from their contemporaries. It’s apparent from their production on this album that Fireflight thinks they are a much harder band than they actually are. Fireflight is catchy, melodic driven female fronted rock - much more similar to artists like Inhabited or Superchick rather than Flyleaf. Evanescence they are not. That’s not to say that Fireflight isn’t a good band. There are some nice moments on this disc - most noticeably on tracks like “Unbreakable” or the catchy “Brand New Day.” However, most of the album feels like it’s being repeated from similar artists and there’s not much here to separate Fireflight from like-minded female fronted rock bands. Lead singer Dawn Richardson is a very capable vocalist - soaring when she needs to and backing off on the more subtle moments. However, I’d like to see her stretch herself a little more - trying on different styles to see what fits her the best. Overall, Unbreakable will definitely sit well with fans, but I’m not sure how much longevity the album possesses. It’s a strong sophomore album, but they still haven’t found where they fit just yet.
