Above the Noise is Jaime Jamgochian’s (pronounced Jam-go-shen) latest release from Centricity records. Jamie was the Seattle-based label’s flagship artist. She has since been joined by industry veterans Downhere, and other true talents like Circleslide, Daniel Kirkley, and Jason Gray. This is Jaime’s fourth release on the label, which makes me wonder how I’ve missed this talent before. With her worshipful, heartfelt lyrics, pure vocals and singable melodies, Jaime gets your attention right away. I knew I liked her within just a few notes, and the rest of the record only served to confirm my initial impression. Though her lyrics seem to be largely focused on the subject of worship, this is not what I would consider a typical worship record. A few songs may be translated to church congregational use, but for the most part this is a great personal worship album, or just something to keep you sane during your day at work, which is what I’ve been using it for! It really is “Above the Noise.” There is a certain peaceful quality that Jaime has in her voice even when she’s singing a driving tune.  The first song, “Giving It All to You”, is one of those that really blurs the lines between congregational worship and a great pop song. These days, we are seeing self-proclaimed worship artists recording things that sound more like pop songs and pop artists recording worship albums. It makes one wonder what the true definition of a worship artist or even a worship song really is. Is it purely the subject matter, or is it song construction or arrangement, recording style or intent of the heart? Which brings me to another point: Don’t assume that just because this is a worship album that it is full of over emotional ballads and layer upon layer of guitar type sounds. This is a clean sounding record, largely piano based pop, expressed with feeling, but not overly so.  I felt the majority of the record was excellent, whereas most projects in this genre are largely mediocre mixed with only a few truly excellent moments worthy of acknowledgment. “Heal the Wound” was one of my favorites on the record. It talks about wanting to have something to remind us of God’s grace in our lives, and is worth the price of the album alone.

Purchase Above The Noise.
