Ever Stay Red - On the Brink of It All
Producer: Ever Stays Red & Ken Mary
There’s a new record label in town, Vertical Shift Records, and with it an extremely promising new band. Ever Stays Red has been traveling the country and slowly making a name for themselves since 2004 and after three years of touring ended up at the newly formed Vertical Shift Records. Ever Stay Red’s debut national release, On the Brink of It All is almost prophetic in its title - as this band is definitely on the brink of something great with this record. Co-produced by Ever Stays Red and Ken Mary (Megadeth, LaRue, Beach Boys, Alice Cooper), On the Brink of It All is a pretty strong recording for the band and a strong welcome to an industry that is full of tailor-made for radio bands. This album sits squarely between the slick radio production of mainstream rock bands the a more raw sound that could be found at a live show. Part of what sets this band apart is lead singer Dustin Carlson’s stellar vocals partnered with solid rock hooks and tight sound. Musically, the band recalls over emo-based rock bands like Dashboard Confessional, Anberlin, or Mae - especially on openers like “Rocks & Reeds”, “On the Brink of It All” and the sensational “Can’t Explain.” The upbeat numbers are really where the band shines - like the driving “Run” or “Bright Eyes”. Lyrically, the band remains poetic and abstract enough to separate themselves from the pack at radio, but still accessible enough to not offend serious Christian music listeners. Some lyrical moments of greatness include the worship oriented “Glorious” along with “Life In the Fire” or “Look to the Hills” (a retooling of Psalm 121). Ever Stays Red’s debut will surely earn the group some more fans and a coveted spot at Christian Rock radio.
