Daniel Doss Band - Greater Than Us All
Producer: Ed Cash
I have to admit that I had some high hopes for Sparrow Records’ latest “Name Band”. After hearing the band’s incredibly catchy and stirring debut single, “God In Me”, I figured the band was going to follow in the footsteps of fellow “Name Bands” like David Crowder Band and Robbie Seay Band and knock my proverbial socks off. Unfortunately, the band’s debut Sparrow Records album, Greater Than Us All, didn’t quite live up to my expectations. Produced by new GMA wonder-producer Ed Cash (think Chris Tomlin, Bethany Dillon, Bebo Norman), Daniel Doss Band’s Greater Than Us All is sometimes brilliant, but most of the time, it falls into the already over-used modern worship formula. Musically, the band falls right smack dab in the middle of modern worship - recalling the likes of MercyMe, Chris Tomlin, and Pocket Full of Rocks - and in rare instances - a worship focued Daily Planet. Songs like the aforementioned “God In Me”, rocker “Great Dreamer” and humble ballad “I Need You” are definitely album highlights - but those moments don’t last. Lyrically, most of the disc rests in the land of the cliche - especially on songs like “Abba Father”, “Hold On”, and “Lord Reign.” It all makes for an unfortunate listening experience - not that the Daniel Doss Band is bad at what they do - rather, they are quite good at making this kind of music. It just proves a greater point that this kind of radio-friendly, pop/rock saturated modern worship is becoming way too much of a common occurance and that there are not enough risks being taken in modern worship (minus acts like Future of Forestry, David Crowder Band, and Michael Gungor Band). Many people will find this album appealing, but those few who are seeking more artistic expression in their worship music should probably skip this record.
