Modern rock quartet Starfield began their humble journey in their homeland of Canada several years ago.  After attracting the attention of many U.S.-based record labels due to the band’s impressive stage presence and large Canadian fan base - the band was quickly scooped up by Sparrow Records and released their self-titled debut in the States just four years ago.  Though the album didn’t spawn off any huge hit singles or didn’t exactly fly off store shelves - the band released their sophomore outing - Beauty In the Broken in 2006.  That album earned the band a spot on Christian radio station playlists due to their growth as a rock band and almost identical-to-Switchfoot sound.  Now, the band has teamed up with Ed Cash (Chris Tomlin, Bebo Norman) for their third album released in the U.S. - and rather than continuing down the same musical path that they forged with their sophomore record - the band has reverted back to a more worship-focused and watered down sound.  Meaty guitars and personal lyrics don’t abound on I Will Go - rather it’s more of the same cliched Christian rock - not unlike what we’ve heard from the likes of By the Tree, Seven Places, or a lightweight Sanctus Real.  For instance, the band’s cover of Hillsong United’s popular “Hosanna” could have been a souped up Christian rocker - an anthem for all ages (much like Tree63 did for “Blessed Be Your Name") - yet it ended up rather anemic and thin - lacking the writers original thoughts behind the popular song.  Going for what seems like the required Brit-rock sound of modern worship - I Will Go features more of the same in songs like “I Will Go”, “All We Need”, and “Reign In Us.” It’s unfortunate that the band showed so much promise on their sophomore record (even if it had been done before) only to take two steps back with I Will Go.  I’m sure the band will be loved by radio - since this is what the masses are accustomed to hearing now.  It’s just a major disappointment this time around.
