I have to admit that I have never been much of a fan of Sarah Kelly.  Not that the budding singer/songwriter wasn’t any good at what she did - but rather the style of her vocals has never been one that appealed to me.  Her rock-out vocals, reminiscent of a young, less-controlled Ashley Cleveland or Linda Perry, earned her a pretty solid fanbase with the release of her debut, Take Me Away a few years ago.  She took a slight turn in terms of lyrical focus of her last album, Where the Past Meets Today, and its reception was mixed to say the least.  Kelly is returning to the sound and lyrical focus of her debut with this, her third album, Born to Worship.  In fact, even with looking at the album title, it is safe to say that Kelly is even more focused on worship this time around.  Never is this more apparent than in tracks like the lead single “Brand New Day”, “Glorious King”, the title cut “Born to Worship”, and “Beautiful God.” It’s apparent where Kelly’s mind and heart is at this time around.  Musically, Born to Worship is also a bit more toned down compared to her last album - and her vocals a much more controlled and less forced - in other words, she’s not oversinging as much as on her previous records.  This time around, she recalls the likes of Kim Hill more than Alanis Morissette, and it works well for the singer/songwriter.  At times, Kelly even takes on a bit of a country twang, and it works exceptionally well.  Overall, there isn’t anything on this album that is going to jump out as a musical revolution, but it’s nice to hear Kelly a bit more restrained this time around.  If she keeps making solid records like this, there’s no doubt that she could be the next Ashley Cleveland or Kim Hill in Christian music.
