Delirious? - Kingdom Comfort

Delirious? (like many other bands of their niche) is always caught at a crossroads when it comes to making music.  Do they continue down the path of modern worship where they helped pave the way (like albums Cutting Edge, Glo, or World Service?  Or do they instead try their hand at competitive active rock (like albums Touch and Mezzamorphis).  Their fans also seem to be pretty divided - some yearning for the modern worship of their early years, and yet others the more brit-rock influence of the last few years.  2005’s The Mission Bell was somewhat of a lead-in to this latest album - as it helped to combine both elements of the bands history.  However, the band seems to have managed to do it exceptionally well with the release of Kingdom of Comfort - the closest the band has come yet to reproducing the splendid King of Fools sound that put the band on the map in the first place.  Kingdom of Comfort starts off in an unusual way for this rock band - with an acoustic setting to highlight the lyrics and Martin Smith’s ever capable vocals on “Kingdom of Comfort”.  Musically, the band has stripped things down for most of the record - going back to the core rock ‘n roll sound - especially notable on rockers like “Stare the Monster Down”, “Wonder” or “Give What You Got”.  This gutsy, melodic driven rock is where Delirious? shines - and never have they sounded better of the last few years as they do here.  There are also more quite, ethereal moments as well - such as the beautiful anthem “We Give You Praise” or equally as strong “What a Friend I’ve Found”.  Lyrically, the album was inspired by recent trips to poverty stricken countries across the world - and the band manages to capture their thoughts on the subject without sounding preachy or one-dimensional.  Overall, Kingdom of Comfort should find a home among all kinds of fans of the band - as well it should.  It’s nice to see Delirious? going back to what they do best.

Purchase Kingdom of Comfort.
