Passion: God of This City
Producer: Nathan Nockels
It’s hard to believe that the Passion movement has now been in existence for 10 years. The movement shocked the music industry when their debut album, Passion: Live from the 268 Generation became of one of the biggest sellers of the year. That series of albums went on to be an industry mainstay - churning out modern classics like “How Great Is Our God”, “Better Is One Day”, “Breathe”, “Amazing Love” and helping to boost the career of artists like Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, David Crowder Band, Fee, Watermark, and many more. Now - 10 years after the release of that album - Sixsteps Records is releasing the 10th installment of the popular series - God of This City. If you’ve been familiar with previous recordings from the Passion series - then you know what to expect here. This recording features various recordings from different Passion conferences all across the world. There’s stuff that we’ve heard before (David Crowder Band’s effective “Everything Glorious” and Chris Tomlin’s “Let God Arise” for example) as well as a slew of new songs that are surely to catch on like wild fire. The real appeal here is obviously the new material from Chris Tomlin and Matt Redman - two of the biggest worship leaders for this movement. Tomlin’s “Sing, Sing, Sing” is a strong upbeat number, much better than 2006’s “Party”. Also - Matt Redman’s “Dancing Generation” is sure to become a classic at college campuses all across the nation. Probably the biggest disappointment comes from the fact that there aren’t any real classic moments here. “God of This City” by Tomlin and Christy Nockels’ “Hosanna” are very strong inclusions, but neither have the same kind of appeal that songs like “How Great Is Our God” and “Better Is One Day” had and probably won’t appeal to as large an audience segment. It’s also nice to see Kristian Stanfill and Fee getting some time on the disc as emerging leaders in the movement. Passion: God of This City surely won’t disappoint fans of the series.
