Jon Abel - Back to You
Producer: Cary Pierce
You’ve not likely heard of Jon Abel - at least not from the traditional outlets of Christian music and press. However, Abel is most well known for writing the Passion worship song “Awesome Is the Lord Most High” (found of Passion’s Everything Glorious and Chris Tomlin’s See the Morning). Abel has been doing the indie thing remarkably well over the last couple of years, and after listening to his second solo outing, Back to You, one has to wonder what exactly is stopping labels from scooping this guy up. A hit song within the Passion movement is definitely not something every songwriter can boast, but the great thing about Abel is that he has more up his sleeves other than “Awesome Is the Lord Most High” (which is included on this disc). Musically, there’s a lot of like here - especially if you’re a fan of pop/rock based worship music that has a very corporate feel as well - similar to artists like Chris Tomlin, Aaron Shust, or Matt Redman with touches of smart pop a la Lifehouse of The Fray. From the opening strains of “Running After You” and the rollicking “Revelation Song” - one knows that Abel isn’t just a one-hit wonder. There’s nothing new and innovative here, but Abel does it as good, if not better, than most in this style of music. Lyrically, again, there’s nothing profound here - and with songwriting credits going not only to Abel but to individuals like Steve Hindalong, Mark Byrd, Chad Cates, Barry Weeks, Brandon Heath, and more - you know these aren’t basic run-of-the-mill songs. The album even features background vocals from new industry golden boy Brandon Heath to boot. Not too bad for an indie release at all.
