The Rubyz - The Rubyz
Producer: Chris Omartian
Let’s face it folks. Teen pop is always going to be here no matter how much you and I dislike it. Whether it is truly innovative acts of their time (think The Beatles or Elvis) or just more fluff (Backstreet Boys, New Kids On the Block, Tiffany) - a new batch joins the ranks every few years. This time around - we have acts like Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, and High School Musical to keep our tweens happy - and Christian music is doing its part as well by offering us up acts like pureNRG, Jump5, Britt Nicole, and the like. The latest tween-inspired act comes from executive producer Joy Williams (a former teen-queen herself in Christian music). The Rubyz are made up of three adolescent girls - Cammie, Alexis, and Marissa (ages 16, 14, and 13 respectively). There isn’t really much to talk about here musically. If you’ve heard one teen act from today - you’ve heard them all - and The Rubyz pull it off well. The girls all have nice enough voices - but the vocal processing and stacking is a little bit too overwhelming at times - especially on tracks like “We Got Da Beat” and their cover of new modern worship hit “We Shine” (by Fee). If you’ve heard the latest stuff form Miley Cyrus, pureNRG, or Everlife - that’s what you can expect from The Rubyz. Producer Chris Omartian (Pink, Jump5) does a nice enough job here, but there’s nothing truly innovative for this brand of pop music - not that I was expecting too much. Like other Christian acts targeting the Radio Disney market - The Rubyz offer Christian encouragement (especially on songs like “We Shine” and “Just Like You") as well as fun, wholesome entertainment (their cover of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and “Baila Chiquita” noted here). Overall, The Rubyz target audience is going to fall in love with this act just like they have Jump5 and pureNRG. They do what they do well, just don’t expect the adults to go ga-ga over them.
