WOW Hits 1
Producer: Too many to list
The WOW brand in Christian music is the best selling and most successful marketing approach in Christian music. Patterned after the popular European NOW series (a couple years before that particular series came to the United States), WOW became a phenomenon in 1995 with the release of WOW 1996. It - along with every album released after it - was meant to feature the year’s best - 30 artists and songs on two discs. In addition, the series broke off into other profitable ventures like WOW Gospel, WOW Worship, and WOW Classics, to name a few. Now, the people behind WOW are re-formating the popular series to be more reflective of what truly is the year’s best. WOW Hits 1 is the first of what will be three releases a year - showcasing what has been hot at radio over the last few months. WOW Hits 1 definitely does its job of showcasing the hottest artists in Christian music - including Casting Crowns, Steven Curtis Chapman, David Crowder Band, Chris Tomlin, and more. It definitely does its job better than past WOW releases at showcasing what has been hot at radio over the last few months. The release also feature three new artists - Tenth Avenue North, Cadia, and Daniel Doss Band - none of which have had a huge hit at radio - but a nice inclusion nonetheless. This release also features a brand new song - sure to draw in potential buyers - and by not just anyone - but Michael W. Smith with special guests Christy Nockels and Israel Houghton. However, those wanting simply the new songs are better off to buy the song on iTunes and ignore the rest here - especially bigger fans of the genre probably already have most of these songs. It is a definite step up for the series - but it still has a way to go before it’s a perfect compilation and series.
