Jars of Clay - Greatest Hits

One can’t deny the influence and success that Jars of Clay has had on Christian music since they debuted in the industry in 1995.  Their debut record went on to sell over two million units and featured the crossover success of hits like “Flood” and “Worlds Apart”.  None of their following albums went on to achieve as much success - but the band has always been a fan favorite and sold exceptionally well - whether they were releasing more commercial albums like The Eleventh Hour and Good Monsters or more critically appealing albums like Much Afraid or Who We Are Instead.  The band was always at odds it seemed with their record label, Essential Records, and they are now free the label to do what they please - such as last year’s Christmas album release.  However, through contractual obligation, Essential Records is releasing yet another greatest hits compilation for the band - much like they did for artists like Bebo Norman, Caedmon’s Call, or FFH when they exited the label.  Greatest Hits is a fitting enough tribute to the band - featuring some of their most cherished songs like “Flood”, “Love Song For a Savior”, “Crazy Times”, “Unforgetful You”, and “Dead Man (Carry Me)”.  However, as daunting as it may seem to fit all of the Jars’ hits onto one CD - it’s still puzzling to see the exclusion of some big hits and fan favorites of the band - like “Liquid”, “Five Candles (You Were There)”, “I’m Alright”, “Revolution”, and “Overjoyed”.  To not include them but still keep songs like “Amazing Grace” and “I Need You” seems odd to say the least (not that those songs aren’t deserving of being included - the others just seemed more fitting).  Overall, Greatest Hits does seem to get it better than their last best-of collection, The Essential Jars of Clay - but it’s still a far cry from being a solid collection of the band’s greatest moments.  Greatest Hits does provide some incentive for the buyer - including “Love Is the Protest” - a brand new recording from the band.

Purchase Greatest Hits.
