Meredith Andrews - The Invitation
Producer: Jason Ingram
Meredith Andrews is the latest signee to the Word/Curb/WB Records family. She’s just one of a slew of female artists who are set to make their impact on the industry this year. Being a seasoned worship leader and having toured with Truth previously, it seems that Meredith has all of her bases covered from both ministry and entertainment aspects - and her debut album, The Invitation, finds her balancing the two very well. Andrews has a very impressive voice and does the worship-pop thing very well. Her voice soars over more soft moments (like “You’re Not Alone") as well as the bigger, more aggressive numbers (such as “Lift Up Your Head” and “The New Song We Sing"). Musically, Andrews is modern pop reminiscent of pop songstresses like Vanessa Carlton or Anna Nalick with strong influences for modern worship artists like Chris Tomlin or Vicky Beeching. It’s not a bad thing, but doesn’t really set Carlton a part musically from other worship acts like Beeching or Laura Story. If Andrews would try more songs like the brit-influenced “Who Is Like You” - she might stand out a bit more. Lyrically, again, Andrews is pretty much in worship leader mode - most notably seen on tracks like the aforementioned “You’re Not Alone”, “Treasure”, and “Draw Me Nearer”. While not really being labeled as a worship artist, Andrews naturally falls into the category - but it’s hard to categorize her since the label is pushing her as the next big pop artist. One can definitely tell that Andrews is talented and that The Invitation is a fine record. It’s just not real clear where Andrews is putting her focus. Perhaps the next record will reflect where she wants to go both musically and commercially.
