Josh Wilson - Trying to Fit the Ocean In a Cup
Producer: Information not provided
New singer/songwriter Josh Wilson signed with EMI Christian Music Group not long ago to little fan fair and promotion. His current single, “3 Minute Song”, has had mild reception at radio, and his debut album, Trying to Fit the Ocean In a Cup released this week with scant a bit of buzz. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t listen to what he has to say, because Trying to Fit the Ocean In a Cup is a doozy of a release that made this reviewer sit up and take immediate notice. Rarely does a debut album hit my desk that features such creative melodies and impressive vocals as Josh Wilson’s. Musically, the album is very commercial and up to date - showcasing influences from artists like Jason Mraz, Gavin DeGraw, and by Wilson’s own admission, John Mayer. This is smartly crafted pop at it’s finest - and nowhere is this better seen than on the opening cut “The Saints”, first single “3 Minute Song”, and friendly pop of “Let Me Love You.” The real draw of the record is Wilson’s undeniable musicianship - as he’s skilled on everything from electric and acoustic guitar to mandolin and banjo - all of which get time on the record. In fact, at times, Wilson recalls a less seasoned Phil Keaggy. Lyrically, Wilson touches on a myriad of subjects - including physical possessions ("Dear Money"), complexity of ministering in such a fast paced society ("3 Minute Song” - which bears a familiar idea also seen in Chris Rice’s “The Other Side of the Radio"), heart’s cry to God ("Savior, Please"), beauty of creation ("Beautiful Like This"), and more. No, it’s nothing exceptionally new or unique - but it’s also not written in a way that is terribly cliched and overused either. Wilson is a rare find in this industry. He’s a musician’s musician, excellent vocalist, and pretty strong writer to boot. Hopefully he won’t stay under the radar much longer.
