Article One debuted on the Christian music scene last year.  Don’t worry if you don’t remember them.  It’s not their fault - really.  Their debut album, AO was pretty typical.  It was a strong debut that featured strong pop hooks - but it was also a lot like a myriad of other releases from new bands on the scene.  The band just kind of fell through the cracks, so to speak, despite a decent single ("Heaven Let Me Know") and pretty strong media coverage.  The band is back with Colors & Sounds, their sophomore national release with Inpop Records.  Not only is this a better entry into a crowded pop/rock scene, it’s also a complete musical makeover for the group.  Colors & Sounds is not just a step in the right direction - it’s like the band turned around and went somewhere else all together - and it fits the group exceptionally well.  No more are they a typical pop/rock youth group band - rather they’ve embrace a more synth-heavy sound, not unlike what is being heard from the David Crowder Band with shades of melodic pop the Newsboys.  The group also sounds a bit like the pop trio Jake - with a bit more of an updated sound to embrace today’s euro-pop scene.  The album kicks off with the radio-friendly “Without You (I’m Not Alright” and hits other listener-friendly tunes like “Colors & Sounds”, “Love You Tomorrow”, and “If the Worlds Give You Up”.  However, helping to really set the band apart from similar synth-drenched bands is the inclusion of violin in their tracks and live concert settings.  What makes this album so great is not only the fact that Article One has found a more unifying sound, but that it’s another inclusion into the synth-oriented sounds that aren’t very prevalent in the Christian music community.  It’s nice to hear something that isn’t the typical pop/rock band with acoustic worship moments thrown in to sell CDs.  Colors & Sounds is a fantastic contribution to Christian music this year, and Article One should be applauded for their effort.

Purchase Colors and Sounds.
