Bryan Brown - Shine
Producer: Stephen Gause
Bryan Brown never had aspirations to be a worship leader. In fact, he didn’t really want to be a consistent Christian. However, all of that changed when he fully accepted Christ as his savior and accepted the call of God on his life to lead others into worship. Brown has sense been a worship leader for three different churches over the past seven years - most recently Nashville, TN’s West End Community Church. Now, Brown is releasing Shine in order to share his love for worship with many more across the country. Upon hearing the first few strains of the album’s opening cut, “Shine”, the listener knows they aren’t in for the same kind of worship album that artists like Chris Tomlin makes - rather this is pure atmospheric, Brit-rock flavored stuff - not unlike what we hear on a regular basis from artists like Delirious? or Hillsong United - with pop elements of the likes of Coldplay or Leeland thrown in for good measure. There’s not a lot here that is really focused on congregational worship - as these sound more like the stuff being heard on pop radio instead of a worship service. Browns claims to have been majorly influenced by the work of Matt Redman - and those influences are readily seen in Shine - especially the more Passion influenced tracks like “Shine”, “Glorious”, “Breaking Me”, and “Faithful”. Lyrically, there’s not much to talk about here - it’s as straightforward worship as one can get - nothing too original or too cliched. Therein lies the greatest problem with Shine - all the songs tend to run into one another - lacking originality between tracks. There’s also not a lot to set Brown apart from other atmospheric worship leaders. It’s done well, but not well enough to really set Brown apart. Perhaps future outings can find Brown taking on more of his own sound rather than the sounds of others.
