Shawn McDonald - Roots Remixed EP
Producer: Information not provided
Shawn McDonald has to be the hardest working guy in Christian music. He is consistently touring and, much to the delight of his legions of fans, releasing new music. McDonald - since his debut only 4 years ago - has released three critically acclaimed studio albums (Simply Nothing, Ripen, and Roots) and two live EPs (Live In Seattle and Shattered Pieces: Live). Now, McDonald is releasing his first remix EP - the aptly titled Roots Remixed EP. This new release features six songs from the Roots album in brand new arrangements. Unlike most remix releases, these songs aren’t saturated with over production and bouncy programming and drum loops. Rather, these are complete reinventions of songs - with a more dramatic and moody bent. Ambient sounds are prevalent here - not unlike what you’d hear from Postal Service. “Roots” new feel is rather charming - and “Waltz In Three” receives a brand new feel - abandoning the meter that defined the song before. There are a couple songs that didn’t really need anything changed to begin with - and the remixes did nothing to add to the beauty of already strong songs ("Captivated" and “Shadowlands” in particular). With the new age of digital music on us, artists can now feel free to be more creative and unique in their releases - which is what McDonald did here with Roots Remixed EP. This is McDonald in a new setting that fits him well. It’s nice to hear the folksy-bluesy singer/songwriter tackle a different side of music - even if it is only available digitally.
